Tesla Premium Connectivity Cost: What a Used Tesla Buyer Actually Gets (and Pays)

By Rohulla Hazrat · · 6 min read

The short answer: Premium Connectivity is $9.99 a month or $99 a year — and on a used Tesla, the free Standard clock started years ago

Every Tesla runs on one of two connectivity packages, and Tesla publishes both the prices and the catch on its Connectivity support page. Standard Connectivity is included at no additional cost — but only for eight years beginning on the first day the vehicle was delivered as new by Tesla (or first put into service, for example as a demonstrator), whichever came first. Premium Connectivity, the package that runs the car’s data features over cellular, is currently $9.99 per month plus tax, or $99 per year plus tax, and you can subscribe at any time from the car’s touchscreen or the Tesla app. On a new car that math is an afterthought. On a used car — say a 2019 or 2021 model — the eight-year Standard clock may already be partway or fully run, and the Premium subscription is yours to start, not the seller’s to hand over. Here is what each package actually includes, what changes when a Tesla changes owners, and how to check the exact car before you buy it.

1. What Standard Connectivity includes — and when it runs out on a used car

Tesla states that all its vehicles come with Standard Connectivity, included for eight years from that original new-delivery date. With Standard, you get basic maps and navigation and music streaming over Bluetooth, plus access to most connectivity features over Wi-Fi — meaning the car needs a Wi-Fi connection (at home, or a phone hotspot) to use them. Two used-buyer consequences follow from Tesla’s own wording:

  • The clock does not reset when the car is sold. The eight years run from when the car was delivered as new, not from your purchase date. Tesla notes that buyers of a Tesla Certified Pre-Owned vehicle are told how long their Standard access lasts — on a non-certified used car, check it yourself in the car’s software and upgrades screens and in the Tesla app after the ownership transfer; our used Tesla app ownership transfer guide walks through that handover.
  • Age matters more than mileage here. A low-mile 2018 car and a high-mile 2022 car can be in completely different connectivity positions. Put "connectivity package and expiry" on the same pre-purchase checklist as battery health and recall status — see our used Tesla battery health guide and recall check by VIN guide.

2. What Premium Connectivity adds — and what it costs over a loan term

Premium Connectivity provides access to all connectivity features over cellular, in addition to Wi-Fi. Tesla introduces connectivity as the thing that powers features that require data — streaming music and media and live traffic visualization among them — and notes that some streaming services require their own paid subscription on top, for either package. Tesla also cautions that features are subject to change and can vary by hardware configuration, and that some features (its examples include Caraoke and video streaming) are not supported on some vehicles — one more reason to test the exact car’s screen, not a brochure.

The cost math is simple and worth doing over the years you plan to keep the car: $99 a year is $495 over five years; paying monthly at $9.99 runs about $599 over the same five years, before tax in both cases. That is small next to insurance — see our Tesla insurance cost guide — but it belongs in the same honest ownership budget as charging, which we break down in our used Tesla ownership cost guide and Supercharger cost guide. New Tesla orders receive a Premium trial at delivery; a used purchase does not restart any trial — you subscribe under your own account once the car is transferred to you.

3. Do you actually need Premium? A practical way to decide

  • You mostly drive with navigation and Bluetooth music, and the car parks on home Wi-Fi: Standard covers basic maps and navigation and Bluetooth streaming, and features work over Wi-Fi. Many owners run Standard happily.
  • You road-trip, commute in traffic, or stream in the car daily: Premium’s cellular access to live traffic visualization and streaming is the convenience you will feel every drive, and at $99 a year it is one of the cheapest subscriptions in the car.
  • You are buying an older car: check whether Standard is still within its eight years first. If it has expired, compare the car’s price against an identical car with time left — connectivity status is a real, checkable difference between two used Teslas that look the same in photos.

Whichever way you land, decide with the car in front of you: open the connectivity information in the car you are buying, confirm the package it shows today, and budget the subscription as your cost from day one rather than assuming anything transfers from the previous owner.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Tesla Premium Connectivity cost in 2026?

Per Tesla’s Connectivity support page (checked October 21, 2026), Premium Connectivity is $9.99 per month plus applicable tax, or $99 per year plus applicable tax, purchasable from the car’s touchscreen or the Tesla app.

Does Premium Connectivity transfer to a new owner when a Tesla is sold?

Premium is a subscription you buy under your own account — Tesla sells it to the vehicle’s owner through the touchscreen or app at any time. Do not budget on the seller’s subscription continuing; plan to start your own after the ownership transfer, and verify the car’s current package in its software screens before you buy.

How long does Standard Connectivity last on a used Tesla?

Eight years from the day the vehicle was delivered as new by Tesla, or first put into service (for example as a demonstrator), whichever came first. The period is tied to the car’s original delivery, not to your purchase date.

What do I lose with only Standard Connectivity?

You keep basic maps and navigation and Bluetooth music streaming, and most features still work over Wi-Fi. What Premium adds is cellular access to all connectivity features — the data-dependent extras such as live traffic visualization and in-car streaming without a Wi-Fi connection. Feature availability varies by hardware, per Tesla.
