How Much Is Tesla Insurance? A Used Tesla Buyer’s Cost Guide

By Rohulla Hazrat · · 5 min read

The short answer: there is no single Tesla insurance price

Shoppers ask one question — "how much is Tesla insurance?" — and there is no honest single number. Your premium is set driver by driver and car by car, and in California the rules for what an insurer may weigh are written into state law. What you can do before you buy is learn exactly which levers set the price, why Teslas often quote higher than comparable gas cars, and how to get real quotes on the exact car you are considering — before you own it.

1. California law decides what sets your rate — in a fixed order

Under Proposition 103 and California Insurance Code section 1861.02, auto premiums must be determined by three factors in decreasing order of importance: first, your driving safety record; second, the number of miles you drive annually; third, your years of driving experience. Other approved factors — the car itself, where it is garaged, the coverage you choose — may only be weighed after those three.

Two California consequences matter for used Tesla shoppers. Insurers here cannot use your credit score or gender to set auto rates, so a clean record counts for more in California than in most states. And California law guarantees qualifying good drivers — licensed at least three years with a near-clean record — a discount of at least 20 percent, as the California Department of Insurance consumer guidance summarized here explains. If your record is clean, California is structurally one of the fairer places to insure any car, Tesla included.

2. Why a Tesla can still quote higher than a gas car

The car itself is one of the secondary factors, and this is where Teslas pull premiums up. When a covered claim happens, the repair bill tends to be larger: body work can involve aluminum panels and bonded structures, a minor parking impact can damage cameras and ultrasonic sensors that then need recalibration, and fewer independent shops are equipped for the work, which can stretch repair times and rental-car costs. Insurers price that claim severity in advance. Model choice matters too — a Model 3 generally costs less to repair and replace than a Model X, so it generally quotes lower, but the only number that counts is a quote on your record, your mileage and the specific car. See the repair-cost discussion in this Tesla insurance cost overview.

3. Tesla Insurance in California works differently than in other states

Tesla sells its own insurance, and California is one of the states where it is offered — with a California-specific twist. In most states Tesla Insurance prices partly on a monthly Safety Score built from your driving. In California it does not: Tesla’s own support page states that the California product does not use Safety Score to determine your monthly premium, and California policyholders may opt in to receive a Safety Score for educational purposes only.

Per Tesla’s California insurance page, you quote and manage the policy in the Tesla app, and you will need the car’s VIN, your driver’s license, proof of residency and proof of registration. California residents can also cover vehicles not produced by Tesla on a Tesla policy. Treat Tesla Insurance as one quote to compare — on equal limits and deductibles — against traditional carriers, not as an automatic default.

4. Used-car details that move the quote

Title status. A car with a branded or salvage title can be difficult or impossible to cover with full collision and comprehensive coverage at some carriers. Read our guide to clean title versus salvage before falling for a suspiciously low price.

Model, trim and year. Performance trims and the larger Model S and Model X typically carry higher parts and replacement costs than a Model 3 or Model Y. Premium Autos stocks all four models, so quote the exact trim you are serious about, not a generic Tesla.

Your stated annual mileage. Because mileage is California’s second-heaviest rating factor, be accurate: overstating it raises your premium, and understating it can create problems at claim time.

Deductibles and limits. Comparing quotes only works if the coverage matches. Line up the same liability limits and the same collision and comprehensive deductibles on every quote.

5. How to price insurance before you buy the car

You do not need to own the car to quote it. Take the VIN from the vehicle’s listing, get at least three quotes on identical coverage — including Tesla Insurance if you are considering it — and add the winning premium to your ownership budget alongside Supercharging costs and charging at home. If a quote comes back far above the others on the same car and coverage, that spread is normal in this market and is exactly why shopping the quote matters as much as shopping the car.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Tesla insurance per month?

There is no reliable single figure. In California your rate is driven first by your driving record, then your annual mileage, then your experience, and then by the specific model and coverage. Two drivers can receive very different monthly premiums for the same used Model 3. The only accurate answer is a quote on the VIN you intend to buy.

Does Tesla Insurance use my Safety Score in California?

No. Tesla states that its California insurance product does not use Safety Score to determine your monthly premium; California policyholders can opt in to see a Safety Score for educational purposes only.

Is a used Tesla more expensive to insure than a new one?

Not automatically. A used car’s lower value can pull comprehensive and collision costs down, while its repair costs stay similar to a new car’s. Which effect wins depends on the model, the carrier and your record — again, quote the specific car.

Can I insure a salvage-title Tesla?

Liability coverage is usually obtainable, but many carriers limit or decline full coverage on branded-title cars, and lender-financed purchases typically require full coverage. Confirm insurability on the exact VIN before you buy.
