Look beyond the odometer

When comparing a used Tesla or another electric vehicle, ask about the tires currently fitted to the car, their condition and any upcoming replacement needs. Total vehicle mileage does not tell you how many miles the current tires have covered.

Why tire life varies

Vehicle weight and strong acceleration can increase demands on tires. Michelin identifies weight and torque as important factors for electric vehicles. There is no single replacement mileage for every used EV: tire design, driving habits, maintenance and the individual vehicle all matter.

Do not assume an EV badge guarantees long tire life or that uneven wear is automatically caused by regenerative braking. Ask a qualified tire professional to assess the actual condition and vehicle requirements.

A buyer’s tire question sheet

Identify the fitted tires. Record the make, model and size on each wheel. Ask whether the fitment meets the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications, including load and speed requirements.
Ask for measured condition. Request tread-depth measurements for each tire and an explanation of uneven wear. A view of the outer shoulder may not show the full condition.
Review damage and age. Ask a professional to evaluate cracks, bulges, cuts or other concerns. Tread remaining is not the only consideration.
Ask about replacement history. Find out whether invoices or rotation records are available. Missing records are a reason to ask questions, not proof of a defect.
Separate condition from future costs. If replacement is recommended, obtain a written quote for the correct fitment before comparing total purchase costs.

Questions about maintenance

NHTSA recommends checking tire pressure monthly when tires are cold and using the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure rather than the maximum printed on the tire. Follow the vehicle’s rotation guidance; do not apply a generic mileage interval to every wheel-and-tire arrangement.
