How battery figures are labeled

Every EV listing shows a battery figure, labeled so you can tell them apart:

  • Tested is a battery capacity test on file for that exact VIN. 0 of the 17 EVs shown here have one.
  • Estimated from displayed range (shown as “Displayed range”) compares the range that exact car shows at a full charge with its original EPA rating. It is a calculation for that VIN, not a lab test. 0 of 17.
  • Typical estimate (shown as “Est. ~X%”) is the typical figure for a car of that model, age and mileage from published fleet data (TeslaTracker for Teslas, sharpened with its per-trim figures; Geotab for other EVs). It is not a measurement of the car itself, and you can request a report. 17 of 17.
  • Similar Teslas display is the full-charge range comparable used Teslas show (same trim, year and mileage), from TeslaTracker, with how many cars it is based on. It describes similar cars, not that one. 0 of 17.

Used Tesla Model S buying guide

The Model S is Tesla's full-size liftback sedan and its longest-running model, on sale since 2012. Over the years it has been sold under battery-size names such as 75D, 90D, 100D and P100D, then as Long Range, Performance and Plaid. A refreshed Model S with a new interior and a horizontal center screen arrived for the 2021 model year.

Range, battery and charging

Each listing labels its battery figure as a battery test result, the full-charge range the car displayed when we recorded it, or a typical estimate for its age and mileage. Only a test measures the battery itself.

Teslas use Tesla's charge port, standardized as SAE J3400 (often called NACS), and can use Tesla's Supercharger network, billed through the Tesla app. At home, a Level 2 (240-volt) circuit is the usual setup.

How we report battery health

What to check on a used Tesla Model S

  • Check the battery figure on the listing and how it is labeled: tested, displayed range, or an estimate for age and mileage.
  • On older cars, check that the door handles present and retract smoothly and that the touchscreen is clear and responsive.
  • If the car has air suspension, watch it raise and lower and look for a level stance after it sits.
  • Check tire wear and brakes, since these are heavy, quick cars.
  • Test both AC and DC charging if you can.

Warranty basics

Under Tesla's current terms the Model S battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years or 150,000 miles with at least 70% battery capacity retained; a Model S bought new under earlier terms keeps the battery warranty that applied when it was first sold. Tesla's Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage counts from the car's first delivery and transfers to later owners at no cost.

Financing, trade-ins and test drives

Premium Autos offers financing: you can start a pre-qualification or credit application online, and approval, rates and terms come from the lender. We take trade-ins of any make and model and also buy cars outright, and you can submit your car online for an appraisal.
