Tesla Financing With Bad Credit: Compare Your Options
By Premium Autos · · 6 min read
Updated
Financing a used Tesla with a limited or damaged credit history starts with a budget and a comparison of actual offers. A credit score alone does not determine whether a lender will approve a loan. The vehicle, amount borrowed and the lender's assessment also matter. No dealership or lender named here is a guaranteed route to approval.
Compare options, not unsupported rankings
The earlier version of this article ranked lenders and quoted credit-score thresholds without evidence. Those rankings and promises have been removed. Use the following options as a starting point for questions, and verify current eligibility and written terms directly with each provider.
Premium Autos and dealer-arranged financing
If you are considering a car at our Norco or South El Monte store, ask our team about the financing process for that vehicle. A basic contact request on this website is not a credit application or an approval. Sensitive application details belong in the secure provider form, not in a message box. You can also compare a dealer-arranged offer with financing you obtain separately.
A bank or credit union
Ask a bank or credit union whether it finances the specific used vehicle you are considering, whether membership or an existing account is required, and what information it needs. Request the APR, amount financed, term, payment schedule, fees and total payments in writing. Do not assume one type of institution will always offer a lower rate or approve a particular credit profile.
Tesla financing for a purchase from Tesla
Tesla's financing guidance describes Tesla-arranged and third-party financing for its purchase process. It states that estimated payments are subject to credit approval and that its credit application requires at least one hard inquiry. Confirm vehicle and program eligibility directly; buying a Tesla from another dealer does not automatically make that purchase eligible for Tesla's financing.
Specialty auto lenders
If you consider a lender that advertises to borrowers rebuilding credit, compare its written offer with other available offers. Advertising to a credit segment does not prove that everyone qualifies or that its pricing is favorable. Ask about the cost of optional products, any conditions before funding, and whether the loan still fits your budget after insurance and vehicle expenses.
CarMax financing for a CarMax purchase
CarMax's financing page welcomes different credit types and describes access to multiple finance sources. That is not a promise that every applicant receives final approval. The previous statement here that CarMax guarantees approval was unsupported and has been removed. Compare your actual offer and vehicle price; this article does not claim that CarMax's rates are higher or lower than another lender's.
Credit inquiries and rate shopping
Hard inquiries are not permanent. Experian explains that they generally remain on credit reports for up to two years. Their scoring effect varies; a fixed point loss cannot be promised.
The CFPB encourages comparing auto-loan offers. Auto-loan inquiries made within 14–45 days generally count as one inquiry for scoring, depending on the scoring model. Concentrating your shopping in a short period can help you compare offers while limiting the scoring impact. This does not mean the individual inquiries disappear from the report or that unrelated credit applications are included.
Build a workable vehicle budget
Compare more than the monthly payment. Ask for the APR, loan term, total amount financed and total payments. A longer term can make a payment look smaller while extending how long you owe money. Include insurance, charging, registration and a reserve for repairs in your own budget. For a used EV, review the specific vehicle's condition and remaining warranty rather than assuming coverage from the model name alone.
Discuss how a down payment or trade-in changes the proposed loan, without assuming either guarantees approval. If your trade has an outstanding balance, ask how its payoff affects the amount financed. Keep copies of written offers so you can compare the same vehicle, down payment and term.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hard inquiry versus a soft inquiry?
A hard inquiry commonly accompanies an application for new credit and may affect a score. A soft inquiry does not affect credit scores. Ask the provider which check it will use before submitting information. See the CFPB's explanation of credit inquiries.
Can I get a Tesla loan with a 580 credit score?
A score alone cannot answer that question. Ask the lender to assess the specific application and vehicle. This article does not publish an approval threshold, guaranteed rate or guaranteed down payment for any lender.
Should I consider a co-signer?
Ask the lender whether it accepts co-signers and how that would affect the offer. A co-signer takes on a repayment obligation; both people should read the contract and understand their responsibilities. A particular interest-rate reduction is not guaranteed.
What if an application is declined?
Review the lender's explanation and check your credit reports for errors. A decline does not mean you must avoid normal rate shopping or wait an arbitrary 30 days. Evaluate whether another offer or a lower vehicle budget is appropriate, using the rate-shopping guidance above.
